“Bum Phillips All American Opera” enjoyed a three week run in New York back in March of this year. Now the man who created the production wants to bring it to his home town.
Luke Leonard is a graduate of Cypress High School and attended Sam Houston State University before heading off to New York City where he now operates a non-profit theater company known as Monk Parrots.
Leonard says from the moment he came up with the idea to produce an opera based on the life of O.A. “Bum” Phillips, he knew it needed to play in Houston. So now, he’s trying to raise the funds necessary to bring the show to Houston using the crowd funding web site Kickstarter.com.
Luke says he needs to raise just over $33,000, which is about half of what is overall budget needs. But he admits the production wouldn’t even cost that much if he can connect with a sponsoring organization that could take provide a venue or perhaps an orchestra to help keep his expenses low.
Leonard says he has the support of former Houston Oiler Quarterback Dan Pastorini, who attended the show in New York along with Phillips’ son Wade and a few others well known names from Houston. Several corporate sponsors have also expressed an interest, but he says the more support he has from the community itself, the better his chances are of getting a corporate sponsor to sign on.
