IT AIN’T OVER ‘TIL THE FOOTBALL COACH SINGS?
As many fans already know, there is an opera about Phillips in the works from composer Peter Stopschinski (Grupo Fantasma, Golden Hornet Project) and librettist Kirk Lynn (Austin’s Rude Mechs theater company). Bum Phillips, All-American Opera is based on his autobiography (Bum Phillips: Cowboy, Coach, Christian), and is set for a New York premiere in March, 2014.
0 Update: Texas Premiere
We are thrilled to announce that the Bum Phillips opera may make it to Texas next year! On October 18, 2013, the Texas Spirit Theater at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum agreed to partner with Monk Parrots, Inc. to present the opera in Austin. Prospective dates are spring 2014 following the world premiere in New York. We will be seeking additional partners to help make it happen! Follow this website and Facebook pages to stay informed as plans develop.

Bum Phillips (1923-2013)
On the morning of October 19, I watched the sunrise in New York and I swear for a moment the sky was painted Columbia blue, red, and white. Bum is in heaven now. As I looked out of my window thinking about Bum, I sat listening to the first 42 bars of “Retirement (two kinds of coaches)” that Peter Stopschinski recorded and sent to me the other day. I hope Bum is listening too. — Luke Leonard, Director
